Yagishiri Island

An island in the Sea of ​​Japan in the northwest of Hokkaido. It belongs to Haboro Town under the jurisdiction of the Rumoi Subprefectural Bureau. It lies about 25 km west of the main island of Hokkaido, facing Teuri Island, 4 km west across the Musashi Strait. It is 4 km east to west, 2 km north to south, and has an area of ​​5.21 square kilometers. It is mainly composed of andesite rocks from the Neogene period, and the entire island consists of four coastal terraces, the highest point in the center is 97 meters, and the west side forms a sea cliff. After the establishment of Teshiobasho in 1786 (Tenmei 6), it became a bustling herring fishing ground along with Teuri Island as the central fishing ground. Regular ships run between Haboro Port and Teuri Island. The natural forest of Onko (yew) is a nationally designated natural monument. It is part of Teuri-Yagishiri Prefectural Natural Park. 北海道北西部の日本海上にある島。留萌(るもい)振興局管内の羽幌町(はぼろちょう)に属す。北海道本島の西約25キロメートルに浮かび、武蔵水道(むさしすいどう)を隔てて4キロメートル西の天売島(てうりとう)と相対している。東西4キロメートル、南北2キロメートル、面積5.21平方キロメートル。主として新第三紀の安山岩質岩類で構成され、全島が四段の海岸段丘からなり、中央部の最高点は97メートル、西側は海食崖(がい)をなしている。1786年（天明6）天塩場所(てしおばしょ)の設置後、天売島とともにその中心的漁場としてニシン漁でにぎわった。羽幌港と天売島へ定期船が通う。オンコ（イチイ）の自然林は国指定天然記念物。天売焼尻道立自然公園の一部。人口311（2009）。
