Japan's first national leprosy sanatorium. Completed in 1930 (Showa 5) in Nagashima, Okayama Prefecture. The initial capacity was 400, and the first 85 patients transferred from Tama Zenshoen were accommodated there the following year. In 1936, a patient who could no longer endure the poor treatment and attempted to escape was imprisoned, which led to the Nagashima Incident, in which patients demanded improved treatment and the establishment of patient self-governance. The history of Aiseien is said to epitomize the history of leprosy countermeasures in Japan. Leprosy treatment has made remarkable progress today, and it is said that more than 95% of the approximately 5,400 patients living in 13 national sanatoriums across the country have been cured, but it is not easy for them to return to society, and 668 patients are still housed at Aiseien (as of January 1997).
