Kunimi Mountains - Kunimisanchi

Japanese:
Kunimi Mountains - Kunimisanchi

A mountain range that runs almost east to west on the border between Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures. The main peaks, Mt. Ozeki (902m), Mt. Kunimi (969m), Mt. Miyanoo (877m), and Manegahira (893m), are lined up from east to west, and it is the western end of the southern Kyushu mountain range that forms the border between Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures. It forms the watershed of the Kuma River, Minamata River, Komenotsu River, and Sendai River, and is also called the Hisatsu Mountains. Geologically, it is made up of Neogene volcanic rocks (mainly pyroxene andesite), and none of the mountains are steep, and the mountain range as a whole has a fairly large flat surface at an altitude of around 600 to 700 meters. Because this mountain range comes close to the Yatsushiro Sea, it has been known since ancient times as a difficult place to travel; Tsunagitaro Pass (one of the Santaro Passes) on the Satsuma Kaido, Kamemine Pass on the Satsuma Ura Kaido, and Kusana Pass on the Oguchi Road are often written about in poetry because of the difficulty of crossing them and the beautiful views.
