An administrative region in northwestern Canada. It is also translated as the Yukon Territory. Its area is 536,324 km2 and its population is 30,100 (1995). Nearly 70% of the population, or 15,000 people, live in the provincial capital, Whitehorse. The population is 53% British, 17% Native American, and the rest are of German, French, etc. The name of the territory comes from the Yukon River, which is an Native American word meaning "river." Most of the territory is mountainous and has a cold climate with only frost-free days for just under three months from June to August, so the economy relies on the mining of mineral resources.
