This is a former town area in the north of Unzen City, in the southeastern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It is located in the northern part of the Shimabara Peninsula, facing the Ariake Sea. In 1956, Tabira Town and Hijikuro Village were merged to form Kunimi Town. In 1957, Jindai Village was incorporated. In 2005, it was merged with Mizuho Town, Agatsuma Town, Aino Town, Chijiwa Town, Obama Town, and Minamikushiyama Town to form Unzen City. The main base of life is the alluvial fan on the northern slope of Mount Unzen and the basins of the three small rivers that run through it. Each basin forms its own living area, and since Tabira and Hijikuro belonged to the Shimabara Domain and Kojiro belonged to the Hizen Domain (Nabeshima Domain) during the Edo period, there are some differences in the accent of the language and customs. Jindai is purely agricultural, Hijikuro is semi-farming and semi-fishing, and Tabira is mainly agricultural, fishing, and commercial. In agriculture, rice, potatoes, strawberries, etc. are cultivated. In the fishing industry, seaweed is cultivated. The Okichimozuku seaweed growing area in the Toguro River basin is a national natural monument. There are many ancient ruins in the Jindai era, such as the Jindai Alley (Koujiroku-ji, a nationally important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings) centered around the site of the Nabeshima Jinya camp of the Nabeshima clan, the Tsurukame Castle ruins, and Hyakukadai. The Oku-Unzen Tashirohara Plateau, at an altitude of about 1,000m, is a scenic spot and is part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park.KunimiSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
