A region in the Russian Far East. Its administrative unit is Primorskii Krai (Primorskii Krai). To the east is the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, and to the southwest is the lowlands along Lake Khanka. It produces coal, timber, and gold, and is engaged in fishing and fur farming. It became part of Russia in the mid-19th century. It is also known as the setting for Arsenyev's Dersu Uzala (1923).
