A language spoken mainly in central Italy from the 8th century BCE to the 4th century CE, also known as Etruscan. The speakers were the Etruscans, who had taken control of Rome in the 6th century BCE. They absorbed Greek culture and created a script similar to Greek. Currently, over 10,000 inscriptions remain from the 7th century BCE to the time of Augustus, but they have not yet been fully deciphered. Its genealogy is also unknown, but the theory that it originated in Asia Minor (by V. Georgiev of Bulgaria and others) is relatively strong, since inscriptions excavated on the island of Lemnos near Asia Minor are close to Etruscan and it has some commonalities with the Lydian language of Asia Minor. Italian scholars support the theory of indigenous origin. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
