[Nobuhiro Shinji]

First generation

(?-1873). His real name was Saito Sadakichi. He was a disciple of the first Kanda Hakuryu. He was a man of good character, excelled at "Tenichibou," and published "Genkuro Ichidaiki" (1860). In 1870 (Meiji 3), he handed over the reins to his disciple Hakuyuu as the second, and returned to his hometown of Kawasaki, where he was murdered by bandits. He had 82 disciples, and built the foundation for the prosperity of the Kanda school.

2nd Generation

(1842-1921) His real name was Tamagawa Kinjiro. In 1904 (Meiji 37), he handed over the reins to his disciple Shohakusan and became the first Kanda Shori. He was known for his works such as "Gishiden" and "Echigo Denkichi."

3rd generation

(1872-1932) His real name was Fukumatsu Kishida. His specialty was the story of Jirocho, and he was commonly known as Hakuzan Jirocho. He was a man of great chivalry and raised many excellent disciples.

5th generation

(1898-1976) His real name was Okada Hideaki. He bestowed the title of 4th to the surviving son of the 2nd Matsukoi (real name Tamagawa Etsutaro, 1885-1967), and after passing on the title of 3rd Momokawa Joen and others, he took on the title of 5th. He was full of rebellious spirit and was particularly good at "Daibosatsu Toge". In his later years he was known as the 4th Hakusan.

[延広真治]

初代

(?―1873)本名斎藤定吉。初代神田伯竜の門人。人品よく、『天一坊』を得意とし、『源九郎一代記』(1860)を刊行。1870年(明治3)弟子の伯勇に2代目を譲り、故郷川崎に帰ったが盗賊に殺害された。門弟82名に及び、神田派隆盛の基を築いた。

2代

(1842―1921)本名玉川金次郎。1904年(明治37)門人小伯山に3代目を譲り、初代神田松鯉(しょうり)となる。『義士伝(ぎしでん)』『越後(えちご)伝吉』などを得意とした。

(1872―1932)本名岸田福松。『次郎長伝』を十八番にし、俗に次郎長伯山。人柄もまた侠気(きょうき)に富み、優れた門弟を育てた。

(1898―1976)本名岡田秀章。2代目の遺子2代松鯉(本名玉川悦太郎、1885―1967)に4代目を贈り、3代桃川如燕(じょえん)などを経て、5代目を襲名。反骨精神に富み、『大菩薩峠(だいぼさつとうげ)』を得意とした。晩年には4代目伯山と称した。
