1826‐75 German geographer. Born in Dresden, he studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Leipzig, earning a degree in Aristotelian studies, and in 1848 became a newspaper reporter in Augsburg. From 1854 onwards, he worked as an editor for the magazine Foreign Affairs, writing many articles on geography and ethnic groups, while also turning his attention to the history of geography, publishing works such as The Age of Geographical Discoveries (1858) and The History of Geography (1865), followed by New Problems in Comparative Geography (1869), in which he criticised the geography of his predecessor, C. Ritter, and placed the causal understanding of the shape of the earth's surface at the forefront of geographical research. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
