German geographer. Born in Dresden, he studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Leipzig, earning a degree in Aristotelian studies, and in 1848 became a newspaper reporter in Augsburg. From 1854 onwards, he worked as an editor for the magazine Foreign Affairs, writing many articles on geography and ethnic groups, while also turning his attention to the history of geography, publishing works such as The Age of Geographical Discoveries (1858) and The History of Geography (1865), followed by New Problems in Comparative Geography (1869), in which he criticised the geography of his predecessor, C. Ritter, and placed the causal understanding of the shape of the earth's surface at the forefront of geographical research.

ドイツの地理学者。ドレスデンに生まれ，ハイデルベルク，ライプチヒ両大学で法律学を学ぶ，アリストテレス研究で学位を取得，48年アウクスブルクの新聞記者となる。54年以降，雑誌《海外事情》の編集に携わり，地理や民族について多くの記事を執筆するとともに，地理学史に関心を向け，《地理的発見時代》(1858)，《地理学史》(1865)の著書に続いて，《比較地理学の新問題》(1869)などを公刊し，前代のC.リッターの地理学を批判し，地表形態の因果的把握を地理学研究の前面に位置づけた。
