A type of sports jacket. There are several theories about the name, including that it comes from the Norfolk region in eastern England, or that it was first worn by Lord Norfolk, but neither is certain. What first appeared in the 1860s and 1870s as the Norfolk shirt developed into a jacket in the 1880s, and was worn by men, women and children for hunting and sports, combined with a hat and knickerbockers made of the same fabric. When combined with long trousers, it became a casual wear, and has continued to be the basic men's top to this day. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
