Cnidos - Kunidos (English spelling)

An ancient Greek city located on the southern coast of Caria, Asia Minor. It is said to have been founded by the descendants of the Spartans around 900 BC. It was a member of the alliance known as the Dorian Hexapolis. It accumulated wealth early on through trade with Egypt, and colonized Lipara (Lipari Island) off the northern coast of Sicily. It became subordinate to Persia in 546 BC, but joined the Delian League after the Persian Wars. It was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty in the 3rd century BC, and by Rhodes in the 2nd century BC, and was declared a free city under Roman rule from 129 BC. It is now in Turkey.

小アジア、カリア地方の南岸に位置した古代のギリシア都市。紀元前900年ごろスパルタ人の子孫が建設したといわれる。「ドーリス人六ポリス」the Dorian Hexapolisという連合体の一成員であった。早くからエジプトとの交易を通して富を蓄積し、シチリア島の北沖リパラ（リパリ島）を植民。前546年以降ペルシアに従属したが、ペルシア戦争後はデロス同盟に加わった。前3世紀にプトレマイオス朝、前2世紀にはロードスに支配され、前129年以後ローマ支配下で自由都市を宣せられた。現トルコ領。
