Gonja Kingdom - Gonja Kingdom

A kingdom thought to have been formed towards the end of the 16th century in the central part of the present-day Republic of Ghana in West Africa. During this period, Mande merchants were actively penetrating from the Great Bend of the Niger River in the north to the forested areas in the south, and a group of Mande Gbanya warriors probably parasitic on this long-distance trade migrated to this region and established the conquering state of Gonja. Rather than a single, centralized state, the Gonja was a confederation of several small kingdoms whose rulers were divided from a common dynasty.

西アフリカの現ガーナ共和国の中部に，16世紀末ごろ形成されたと思われる王国。この時代には，北方のニジェール川大湾曲部地方から南の森林地帯へのマンデ系の商人の浸透が盛んになるが，おそらくその長距離交易に寄生する形で，マンデ系のグバンヤ族の戦士集団がこの地方に移住し，征服国家ゴンジャGonjaを築いた。中央集権化の進んだ単一の国家ではなく，共通の王朝から支配者が分かれたいくつもの小王国が連合を形づくっていた。
