Year of death: Tenwa 3.7.3 (1683.8.24)
Year of birth: Bunroku 1.1.4 (1592.2.16)
A feudal lord in the early Edo period. Lord of Takada Domain in Echigo. The sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. His mother was Chaa no Tsubone. His childhood name was Tatsuchiyo. In 1599 (Keicho 4), he became the lord of Fukaya Castle in Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture) with a fief of 10,000 koku, and in 1599, he became the lord of Sakura Castle in Shimousa Province (Chiba Prefecture) with a fief of 40,000 koku. In 1602, he married Gorohachi, the daughter of Date Masamune, the lord of Sendai Province. In leap February 1603, he became the lord of Fukushima Castle in Echigo Province (Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture), and controlled 450,000 koku in both Echigo and Shinano Provinces. The shogunate appointed the surrounding daimyo Murakami Yorikatsu (Lord of Murakami Domain) and Mizokuni Nobukatsu (Lord of Shibata Domain) as vassals to Tadateru, and also added Okubo Nagayasu and Matsudaira Shigekatsu (Lord of Sanjo Castle) as attendant elders. The shogunate's objectives in transferring Tadateru to Fukushima Castle were to subjugate the powerful outside daimyo, the Maeda clan of Kaga, to consolidate the Tokugawa clan in the Kanto area, and to secure a route for transporting gold and silver to Sado. Soon after taking possession of the domain, Tadateru established a horse-riding station and horse-riding inn for the development of the three Sado roads and the Hokuriku Kaido. He also granted salt retailing privileges to Tabata-cho under Fukushima Castle, encouraged the establishment of towns, the opening of new fields and new beaches, and promoted the donation of land for temples and shrines. In 1616, the shogunate transferred Tadateru to Takada Castle (Joetsu City), and when the Siege of Osaka broke out, he was ordered to remain in Edo Castle, but in 1616, he was stripped of his title for being late to the battle and for killing two shogun Hidetada's vassals during the Summer Siege of Osaka. After being exiled to Asakuma in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), he was transferred to the custody of Hida Takayama Castle and Shinshu Suwa Castle.
