1868‐1959 A Soviet actress. After graduating from the Philharmonic School of Music and Drama, she participated in the founding of the Moscow Art Theatre under her teacher Nemirovich-Danchenko. After playing the lead role in The Seagull, she married the writer Chekhov. In addition to Chekhov's plays, which she performed with unchanging love throughout her life, she expressed the joys, sorrows, passion, loneliness and melancholy of modern women with deep truth and poetic emotion in plays by Gorky, Ibsen and others.
