A device used to collect materials from the seabed. Most of them use a steel cable lowered from a ship. There are dredgers (cylindrical, square, etc.) that are towed along the seabed and scoop up the material, snappers that grab the bottom sediment as soon as it hits the bottom, and core samplers that collect samples from several to several tens of meters without disturbing the bottom stratification. Core samplers include weight-weight type, which drives a pipe into the seabed by weight, piston corer type, which uses a piston to suck up the material, and vacuum type, which opens a cylinder when the core hits the bottom and sucks up the bottom sediment. There are also methods such as small core samplers that do not use steel cables, but drop the weight and float to the surface as soon as they have collected the material, and the US deep-sea drilling vessel Glomar Challenger, which uses a special drill to drill from a ship and collect samples from up to several kilometers below the seabed.

海底の物質を採取する装置。船上から鋼索をおろす方式のものが多く，海底を曳行(えいこう)しすくい取るドレッジャー（円筒形，角形など），着底と同時に底質をつかみ取るスナッパー，底質の成層を乱さずに数m〜数十mの試料を取る柱状採泥器などがある。柱状採泥器には重量でパイプを海底に打ち込む重錘式，これにピストンを併用して吸い上げるピストンコアラー方式，着底時にボンベが開いて底質を吸い込む真空式がある。鋼索を用いないで採取と同時に錘を放棄して浮上する小型柱状採泥器や，特殊なドリルで船上から掘削して海底下数kmまでの試料を採集する米国の深海掘削船グロマー・チャレンジャー号のような方法もある。
