Kudon Shitta - Kudon Shitta

Japanese: 瞿曇悉達 - くどんしった

During the Tang Dynasty, many foreigners came to China, including three families of Indian astronomers with the surnames Kashyapa, Gautama, and Kumara, which are transliterations of the Sanskrit words Kāsyapa, Gautama, and Kumara. Qutan Siddha was one of the Qutan families, who served Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty and became Taishi Ling (director of the National Astronomical Observatory). In 718 (the 6th year of the Kaiyuan era), he was ordered by the emperor to translate the Indian astronomical text, the Jiuzhi Calendar, into Chinese. This was later included in the Great Tang Kaiyuan Zhanjing, which he edited and which still exists today. The Jiuzhi Calendar included Indian numerals, which were the origin of Arabic numerals, and the sine function, which was introduced to India from Greece.

唐代には多くの外国人が中国に来住したが，その中には梵語Kāsyapa,Gautama,Kumāraの音訳にあたる迦葉，瞿曇，俱摩羅を姓とする3家のインド天文学者があった。瞿曇悉達は瞿曇姓の一人で，唐の玄宗に仕えて太史令(国立天文台長)となり，718年(開元6)に勅命を受けてインド天文書，九執暦を漢訳した。これは後に彼が編集した《大唐開元占経》に収録されて現存する。九執暦にはアラビア数字の源流となったインド数字や，ギリシアからインドに伝わった正弦関数が記載された。
