Masaaki Ishihara

Japanese:
Masaaki Ishihara
Year of death: 7th January 1821 (9th February 1821)
Year of birth: 1760
A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period, and a member of the court nobility. His first name was Shocho. He was commonly known as Kizaemon or Bunnai. He was called Houdou. There are differing theories about his birth year. He was born into a farming family in Kamimori Village, Kaito County, Owari Province (Tsushima City), but he did not like the family business and devoted himself to studying the "Ryo Gikai" together with Kawamura Hidene, Kamimura Masarin, Inaba Michikuni and others. He was well versed in the study of court nobility, and wrote "Kan'i Tsukō" and "Seisha Tsukō", among others. In 1792, he became a pupil of Motoori Norinaga, and often criticised his teacher's theories, making him stand out among his pupils in Owari. In particular, his commentary on the Shin Kokinshu, Owari Nokaho, put forward a theory opposing Norinaga's Minono Nokaho, which is a perfect example of Masaaki's talent and can be said to have put into practice Norinaga's teaching (words from Tamakatsuma) that "just because it is the teacher's theory does not mean that we should necessarily adhere to it." At the end of the Kansei era, he moved to Edo and followed Hanawa Hokiichi, gaining his trust. As head of the Onkodo school, he worked hard to compile and edit Gunsho Ruiju and Ruiju Kokushi. His works include Nennen Zuihitsu and Edo Shokunin Utaawase. <References> Mori Senzo, "Ishihara Masaaki" (Mori Senzo Collected Works, Volume 7)
