A passerine bird of the Corvidae family (illustration). It is widely distributed throughout the mid-latitudes of the Eurasian continent, and is commonly found in low mountain areas and plain forests throughout Japan. It is about 35 cm long. It has white and black vertical stripes on its head, a grape-colored back and underside, and long black tail feathers. The bases of the secondary flight feathers and rump are white, forming a conspicuous white band when in flight. It is also characterized by unique blue and black stripes at the base of the wings. It is generally a resident bird, but in autumn it migrates to open forests and can be seen in villages and on the outskirts of cities.
