Dieppe (English spelling)

Japanese: ディエップ(英語表記)Dieppe
Dieppe (English spelling)
A seaport city on the English Channel in the Seine-Maritime department in northwestern France. It is located 55 km north of Rouen, at the mouth of the Arc River. It has long been a strategic military location, and was the subject of a struggle between France and England from the mid-12th century until the end of the Hundred Years' War. In the 16th century, it became one of the Protestant strongholds, and in the 17th century, it suffered from the plague, the repeal of the Edict of Nantes, and attacks by the Anglo-Dutch fleet. In the 19th century, it developed as a beach town, and then as a port city and fishing port with the opening of the railway. It is one of the safest ports on the English Channel, with well-developed port facilities. It imports bananas, wool, cotton, and industrial materials, and exports wine, textiles, and vegetables. Industries include shipbuilding, oil refining, machinery, and textiles. Ivory and bone crafts, a tradition dating back to the 15th century, are local specialties. Tourism is also important. There are churches such as St. Jacques Church (13th-16th century). Population: 36,600 (1990).
