A species of brown algae in the Laminaria family, its shape resembles a long bamboo leaf like many other species in the genus Laminaria, but it can be distinguished by the presence of five thin midribs (illustration). Of the five midribs, the one in the middle and the two near the ends rise to the same plane, but the two on the left and right near the center rise to opposite sides. Its life cycle is basically the same as that of the genus Laminaria. It grows below the low tide line in cold seas in the Sanriku region and north of Hokkaido, and the algae can grow to 1-2m in length. It is disliked as a miscellaneous weed among kelp species. It is not particularly used. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
