Indians of Panama. Population: 30,580 (1972). Divided into two groups: those living on the mainland and those living on the San Blas Islands. On the mainland, they live in the upper reaches of the rivers that flow into the Pacific coast, in the hills of eastern Panama, in the lower reaches of the Atrato River, and on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Urabá. The Kuna of the San Blas Islands live on the islands on the Caribbean side between the Gulf of San Blas and Cape Tiburon. The area inhabited by them has gradually shrunk since the conquest period, and continues to do so to this day. Around 1540, they began to come into contact with Europeans and blacks, and as more and more were made slaves, they fled up the rivers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
