Gardenia japonica - Gardenia japonica

Japanese: クチナシグサ - くちなしぐさ
Gardenia japonica - Gardenia japonica

A semi-parasitic biennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Orobanchaceae). The stem branches and spreads at the base, reaching a length of 15-60 cm. The leaves are linear or spatula-shaped. In spring, one flower appears at each side of the upper leaves. The corolla is lip-shaped and pale reddish purple. The capsule is oval and enclosed in a large calyx. It grows under deciduous forests in lowlands, and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and other parts of central China west of the Kanto region. It is named after the shape of the fruit, which resembles a gardenia. It is also known as gardenia because the young shoots are red.
