Order Pelecaniformes, Family Heronidae. Total length 33-39cm. A small heron slightly larger than the common bittern. Sexes are heterochromatic. Males have a blackish head, dark chestnut back, and yellowish-gray coverts. The underside is dull white with a single black vertical line from the throat to the center of the chest. Females have many white spots on the back and coverts, and many vertical lines on the underside. They breed in southeastern Siberia to East Asia, and spend the winter from the Philippines to the islands of Indonesia. They also migrate to Japan as summer birds (→ migratory birds), breeding in grasslands and reed beds from central Honshu northward, but their numbers are smaller than those of the common bittern, and their distribution is more localized. They are listed as endangered (Class IA) in the Red Data Book of the Ministry of the Environment.
