A former town in Inasa County, western Shizuoka Prefecture. Urban areas have developed in Iinoya and Kanasashi, and the Tenryu Hamanako Railway and National Route 257 cross here. Cultivation of mandarin oranges and flowering trees is popular. There are also industries such as transportation machinery and equipment and food products. In the west is Hoko-ji Temple, the head temple of the Hoko-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, known for its Okuyama Hanso-bo temple, which is worshiped as a god of fire prevention. There is Iitani Shrine, which enshrines Prince Muneyoshi. In July 2005, it was incorporated into Hamamatsu City along with Tenryu City, Hamakita City, Haruno Town in Shuchi County, Sakuma Town in Iwata County, Misakubo Town, Tatsuyama Village, Maisaka Town in Hamana County, Yutome Town, Hosoe Town in Inasa County, and Mikkabi Town. Area: 121.32 ^km2 . Population: 15,026 (2003).

静岡県西部，引佐郡の旧町。井伊谷(いいのや)，金指(かなさし)に市街が発達，天竜浜名湖鉄道と国道257号線が交差。ミカン，花木の栽培が盛ん。輸送用機械器具，食料品などの工業も行う。西部に奥山半僧坊で知られる臨済宗方広寺派大本山の方広寺があり，鎮守の奥山半僧坊は火伏(ひぶせ)の神として信仰される。宗良親王をまつる井伊谷宮がある。2005年７月天竜市，浜北市，周智郡春野町，磐田郡佐久間町，水窪町，龍山村，浜名郡舞阪町，雄踏町，引佐郡細江町，三ヶ日町と浜松市へ編入。121.32km²。１万5026人（2003）。
