Naoyoshi Kumagai - Naoyoshi Kumagai

Japanese: 熊谷直好 - くまがいなおよし
Naoyoshi Kumagai - Naoyoshi Kumagai

A poet of the late Edo period. A samurai of Iwakuni Domain, Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture). Commonly known as Yasohachi, later Sukezaemon. His pen name was Choshuntei. He studied waka poetry under Kagawa Kageki (Keien), but fled the domain after becoming involved in a dispute over Kageki's Baigetsudo stipend, and went to Osaka to devote himself to the study of waka poetry. Of Kageki's 1,000 disciples, he was always placed at the top of the Ten Philosophers and the Four Heavenly Kings, and was known for his moderate style of poetry. In addition to his works "Kokinshu Seigi Soron Hochu" and "Kokinshu Ronben," which he wrote in which he argued with Hatta Tomonori over the interpretation of the preface to Kageki's "Kokinshu Seigi," and his family anthologies "Ura no Shiogai" and "Kokinshu Shui," he also wrote "Ryōjin Kōshō," a collection of poems that he enjoyed, and passed away on August 8, 1862, at the age of 81. His posthumous name was Fushikian Kōichi Koji.

Winter has come to stay in the mountains. All night long, the pine fire is burning, and I put on my sandals. Winter has come.
