German author and poet. Born the son of a doctor, he traveled widely around the world, including India, Egypt, and South America, and left behind an excellent travelogue, "Indian Voyage" (1917), which combines detailed observation of nature with a delicate poetic sensibility. As a poet, he belonged to the neo-romantic school, and his descriptions of nature show a tendency toward pantheism. His story of anthropomorphizing animals, "The Adventures of Maya the Bee" (1912), gained fame as a work of children's literature and has been translated into 28 languages. Another notable work is "The People of Heaven" (1915).
