A small perennial plant of the family Pterygoceae (APG classification: Pterygoceae). It was named after its discoverer, Eijiro Uematsu. The stem is 6-10 cm tall, has one to four or five scale leaves, and bears three to nine flowers in a raceme at the top of the stem. The upper flowers in the inflorescence are male, and the lower flowers are female. It flowers from July to October. It grows in forests and lives a saprophytic life. It is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu westward to Okinawa, the Izu Islands, and the Ogasawara Islands. It was thought to be unique to Japan, but it has been discovered to be the same species that is widely distributed in Southeast Asia.
