Kuju [town] - Kuju
An old town in Naoiri County, western Oita Prefecture. Occupies mountainous area at the southern foot of the Kuju volcanic group. The city center developed as a post station on the Higo Kaido road during the Edo period. The town produces rice, vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, flowers, and other crops, and is also active in livestock farming, including beef cattle. The Kuju Mountains in the north and the Kuju Plateau in the south belong to Aso Kuju National Park. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Taketa City along with Ogimachi and Naoirimachi in Naoiri County. Area: 142.69 km2 . Population: 4,933 (2003).

大分県西部,直入(なおいり)郡の旧町。九重(くじゅう)火山群南麓の山地を占める。中心市街は江戸時代肥後街道の宿駅として発達。米,野菜,シイタケ,花卉(かき)などを産し,肉牛などの畜産も盛ん。北部のくじゅう連山,南部の九住高原は阿蘇くじゅう国立公園に属する。2005年4月直入郡荻町,直入町と竹田市へ編入。142.69km2。4933人(2003)。
