The Three Musketeers (English: Les Trois Mousquetaires)

A full-length adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (the Elder). It was serialized in the newspaper "Seinen" from March to July 1844. It added Dumas's fame as a novelist to his previous work as a playwright. In early 17th century France, King Louis XIII and his Prime Minister Cardinal Richelieu continued to be at odds, while Protestants conspired with the British monarchy and threatened domestic order. The characters Athos, Aramis, and Porthos are musketeers on the King's side, and are joined by D'Artagnan, a young knight from the Gascon countryside. The optimistic and friendly foursome go through one adventure after another. The devilish woman Milady, whose identity remains a mystery until the end, also draws the reader's interest. Dumas left two long sequels, "Twenty Years Later" (1845) and "Viscount de Brageronne" (1848-50).

フランスの作家アレクサンドル・デュマ（大デュマ）の長編冒険小説。1844年3～7月、新聞『世紀』に連載。それまでの劇作家デュマに小説家としての名声を加えた。17世紀初頭のフランス、ルイ13世と宰相リシュリュー枢機卿(すうききょう)が対立を続け、一方新教徒たちはイギリス王権の勢力と結託し、国内の秩序を脅かしつつある。登場人物アトス、アラミス、ポルトスは国王側の近衛(このえ)銃士で、そこにガスコーニュの田舎(いなか)から出てきた若い騎士ダルタニヤンが加わり、楽天的で友情に厚い4人組ができあがり、次々と冒険をくぐり抜ける。最後まで正体不明の悪魔的女性ミレディーも読者の興味をひきつける。デュマは続編に、それぞれ大部の小説、『二十年後』（1845）、『ブラジュロンヌ子爵』（1848～50）を残している。
