…Woodwork refers to (1) the natural quality of wood (grain), (2) the rough shape of a work, and (3) work that is not decorated with lacquer or other paints, particularly joinery and lacquerware. Of these, craftsmen who made (3) their living off of these have been widely called “woodworkers” since the early modern period. They can be broadly divided into (a) square woodwork for joinery and other board crafts, (b) round woodwork for circular wooden utensils made by turning, and (c) miscellaneous woodwork such as ladles and cypress (bent wood). Among these, (b) round woodwork was produced mainly using primitive hand-turned pottery wheels and pottery wheels to produce so-called daily tableware (bowls, trays, round trays, etc.), and was particularly familiar to the lives of ordinary people, so the word “woodworker” has come to be synonymous with this type of craftsman. …

…木地は，(1)木の地質(木目)，(2)細工物の粗形，(3)とくに指物･漆器などに漆その他の塗料を加飾しないものをいうが，このうち(3)を製作することを生業とした職人が，近世以来ひろく〈木地屋〉と呼ばれていた。それも大別すると，(a)指物などの板物細工に従った角物木地，(b)円形木器の挽物（ひきもの）細工に従った丸物木地，(c)杓子･檜物(曲物)など雑多な木地細工に従うものがあった。その中で(b)の丸物木地は，工具に原始的な手びきろくろとろくろがんなを操作して，いわゆる挽物の日用食具(椀，盆，丸膳など)を主に生産して庶民生活にとりわけなじみ深いものであったからか，木地屋といえばもっぱらこの種職人の代名詞のようになっている。…
