…Woodwork refers to (1) the natural quality of wood (grain), (2) the rough shape of a work, and (3) work that is not decorated with lacquer or other paints, particularly joinery and lacquerware. Of these, craftsmen who made (3) their living off of these have been widely called “woodworkers” since the early modern period. They can be broadly divided into (a) square woodwork for joinery and other board crafts, (b) round woodwork for circular wooden utensils made by turning, and (c) miscellaneous woodwork such as ladles and cypress (bent wood).
