The amount of speech is small, and speech is halting and congested, resulting in what is known as non-fluent speech. Even if the amount of speech increases, the patient shows symptoms of agrammatism, dropping particles such as te, ni, o, and ha and speaking in a telegram-like manner.

Aphasia is caused by damage to the patient's dominant cerebral hemisphere (the left side in right-handed people) and is divided into sensory aphasia (when language comprehension is primarily impaired) and motor aphasia (when language comprehension is preserved but the ability to express one's own language is primarily impaired).
