Giant eel (English name: Anguilla marmorata)

Japanese: オオウナギ（英語表記）Anguilla marmorata

A fish of the order Anguilliformes and family Anguillidae. It can reach a total length of 1.5m. Its body is long and slender, almost cylindrical, with a slightly laterally compressed tail. Its body color is yellowish brown or dark brown, with dark spots resembling wormholes. Large fish hide in caves at the edge of rivers. It eats small fish, shrimp, and crabs. It is found along the coast from Kagoshima Prefecture, where the Kuroshio Current comes close, to the Boso Peninsula, the Ogasawara Islands, East Africa, and the Natal region of the Republic of South Africa. Its main habitat in Nagasaki, Tokushima, and Wakayama Prefectures has been designated as a national natural monument. Its spawning habits are unknown.
