Police dog

A general term for dogs used by police for search and security. Attempts to use dogs' keen sense of smell and tracking ability to aid in criminal investigations have been around for a long time, and they were already being used in France as an aid in surveillance and arresting criminals around 1759. In 1899, the police dog system was established in Belgium, and gradually spread to other countries, including Germany. In Japan, two dogs, a golden retriever and a great dane, were purchased from England in December 1912 (Taisho 1) and trained, but it did not become a full-fledged system, and the police dog system was launched again at the end of the 1930s. After World War II, with the deterioration of public safety, the usefulness of police dogs was noticed again, and in 1956 (Showa 31), the Metropolitan Police Department began raising and training them. However, some prefectures designate excellent privately trained dogs as commissioned dogs. In Japan, police dogs are used mainly for investigation and security activities. Their main duties include sorting through items left at crime scenes to determine whether they belong to the suspect, tracing the criminal's footsteps, and discovering murder weapons and dangerous objects.

The breeds used as police dogs are best ones that have a strong desire to work, and in Japan German Shepherds are the most commonly used, but the Japan Police Dog Association also certifies Airedale Terriers, Dobermans, Boxers and Collies, and in 1984 Labrador Retrievers were added, followed by Golden Retrievers in 1992. Before they can be deployed to the scene and put to work, they need six months of basic training and one year and six months of applied training.

警察によって捜索や警備に用いられるイヌの総称。イヌの鋭い嗅覚(きゅうかく)や追跡能力を利用して犯罪捜査に役だてようとする試みは古く、1759年ごろにはすでにフランスで監視や犯人逮捕の一助として用いられていた。その後1899年にはベルギーで警察犬制度が生じ、ドイツなど各国にしだいに普及した。日本では1912年（大正1）12月にイギリスから購入されたゴールデンレトリバーとグレートデンの2頭が訓練されたが、本格的な制度とはならず、30年代の終わりごろに改めて警察犬制度の発足がみられた。第二次世界大戦後は治安の悪化もあり、ふたたび警察犬の利用価値が注目され、56年（昭和31）には警視庁が飼育訓練を行うに至った。しかし、県によっては優秀な民間の訓練犬を嘱託犬に指定しているところもある。警察犬は日本ではもっぱら捜査や警備活動に従事している。犯行現場に残された遺留品が容疑者のものか否かの選別作業や、犯人の足跡追及、凶器や危険物の発見などがそのおもな任務である。

　警察犬として用いられる犬種は作業意欲の旺盛(おうせい)な犬種がよく、日本ではドイツシェパード犬がもっとも多く使用されているが、日本警察犬協会ではほかにエアデールテリア、ドーベルマン、ボクサー、コリーを認定しており、84年からはラブラドルレトリバーが、92年からはゴールデンレトリバーがこれに加わった。現場に出動して活躍するまでに、6か月の基礎訓練、1年6か月の応用訓練期間が必要である。
