The people of Shinano suffered from successive disasters, including the Tenmei famine of 1783-86, which began with the burning of Mount Asama, the Tenpo famine of 1833-36, the "Hitsuji flood" of the Tenryu River system in 1715 (Shotoku 5), the "Inu flood" of the Chikuma River system in 1742 (Kanpo 2), and the Zenkoji earthquake of 1847 (Koka 4). However, it is also true that they were able to prevent the devastation of rural areas, maintain a gradual population increase, and ensure an improvement in their standard of living, which was largely due to the development of peasant struggles against the exploitation by the feudal lords.
