Aachen Cathedral - Aachen Cathedral (English: das Aachener Münster)

A chapel attached to a palace built during the Carolingian period in Aachen, Germany. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1978 (World Cultural Heritage). Aachen, also known as Aix-la-Chapelle in French, is the town where Charlemagne (French name Charlemagne) established his court in 794. The current cathedral consists of an octagonal church that was Charlemagne's court church (Basilica Palatina) built between 796 and 805, and a Gothic-style sanctuary built between 1355 and 1414. The octagonal church with its cupola is a representative example of Carolingian art, and is also called the Capella Palatina. Following the Byzantine architectural style, a large cupola was placed over the centralized octagonal church, and Charlemagne's throne was placed in the center of the ambulatory on the second floor. The mosaic murals that decorated the cupola have been lost. Part of Charlemagne's palace, which was connected to the Basilica Palatine by a long corridor, remains today as Aachen City Hall.
