Kuusinen - Kuusinen (English notation) Вильгельмович Куусинен/Otto Vil'gel'movich Kuusinen

Soviet politician. Born in Finland, which was under Russian rule, he graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1905. He joined the Finnish socialist movement while still a student. He participated in the short-lived Finnish revolutionary government of 1918, and defected to Soviet Russia, where he founded the Communist Party of Finland. He was then active mainly in Comintern (Communist International), and served as Secretary of its Executive Committee from 1921 to 1939. He became head of the Finnish Democratic Republic, which was formed at the end of 1939, immediately after the start of the Soviet-Finland War.

After the Karelia region was ceded to the Soviet Union in the Soviet-Volcanic Peace Treaty in the following year, he became Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Karelian-Volcanic Republic. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1941, and a member of the Party's Presidium (later renamed Politburo member) and Secretariat from 1952 to 1953 and from 1957 to 1959. He died in Moscow in 1964 and was buried with great pomp.
