A shortened form of tuxedo coat, synonymous with dinner jacket. A formal evening dress for men, similar to a swallowtail coat. It has a single-breasted front and a shawl collar with facing silk, but there are also peaked lapels and double collars. The formal material is black or navy doeskin or cashmere, and the trousers are of the same material as the jacket. It is worn with a vest or cummerband, and a bow tie of the same material as the cummerbund, but originally it was required to be black. Recently, when worn in summer resorts or in the entertainment industry, there are many variations in the fabric and shape. The name comes from the country club in Tuxedo Park, a residential area of New York, where Griswold Lorillard first introduced the British dinner jacket in 1886.
