The Engi Era

Japanese: 延喜の治 - えんぎのち

During the Heian period, the Engi era ( 901-923 ) under the rule of Emperor Daigo is considered to be the period when aristocratic politics was at its most prosperous, along with the Tenryaku era ( 947-957 ) under Emperor Murakami. The Fujiwara clan's regent government was temporarily suspended, and the emperor came to the forefront of politics, and he was notable for his proactive activities, such as prohibiting the creation of new manors and compiling the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku, Engishiki, and Kokinshu. However, it was also a period when the ritsuryo system was beginning to break down at an underlying level, with the Johei and Tengyō Rebellions occurring shortly thereafter.

平安時代、醍醐天皇執政の延喜年間（九〇一‐九二三）を、公家政治が最も盛んであった時代であるとして、村上天皇の時代の天暦年間（九四七‐九五七）とともに、後世並び称せられた時代。藤原氏の摂関政治が一時中絶して天皇が政治の表面に立ち、荘園の新立禁止や、「日本三代実録」、「延喜式」、「古今集」の編纂など積極的な活動が目立った。他方、すぐのちに承平、天慶の乱が起こるなど律令制の破綻が底部で進んでいた時期でもある。
