...The All Japan Championships (freestyle only) began in 1934, with winners including Eiichi Kazama in the lightweight division, Junichiro Kawamorita, and Yutaro Akita. After World War II, at the 15th Helsinki Olympic Games (1952), Shohachi Ishii (freestyle bantamweight) won the first gold medal for a Japanese, and all five athletes placed in the top three. At the 16th Melbourne Olympic Games (1956), Shozo Sasahara and Mitsuo Ikeda won the featherweight and welterweight freestyle events, placing third overall behind Iran and Turkey. In 1957, the Greco-Roman style was introduced, and Japan sent teams to both the freestyle and Greco-Roman events at the 17th Rome Olympic Games (1960), but suffered a crushing defeat. ...
