Born in Hamburg, he studied at the universities of Leipzig, Jena, Leiden, and Groningen, and then traveled to France, Italy, and England, where he had direct contact with many manuscripts. He became the successor of his teacher Heinsius at Leiden University, and revised and published many ancient Roman classics. He was particularly notable for his revision of works by Livy, Seneca, Gellius, Statius, Plautus, Sallust, Pliny the Elder, and Tacitus. …
