Guarino Guarini

A representative architect of Italian Baroque, he was also known as a philosopher and mathematician. Born in Modena, he became a Theatine friar in 1639 and stayed in Rome until 1647, where he studied theology and mathematics, and was strongly influenced by Borromini's architecture. After designing several cathedrals in Modena, Messina, and Paris, he settled in Turin around 1666, served the Duke of Savoy, and died in Milan. All of his representative works remain in Turin, and the Chapel of Santa Sindone and the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Turin Cathedral are complex and fantastical works that make full use of advanced mathematical knowledge. Palazzo Carignano, with its curved facade and egg-shaped salon, is an extremely dynamic palace.

イタリア・バロックの代表的建築家。哲学者、数学者としても有名。モデナ生まれ。1639年テアチノ会の修道士となり47年までローマに滞在、神学や数学を学ぶ一方、ボロミーニの建築から強い影響を受ける。モデナ、メッシーナ、パリでいくつかの聖堂を設計したのち、66年ごろからトリノに定住、サボイ公に仕え、ミラノに没した。代表作はすべてトリノに残されており、トリノ大聖堂内のサンタ・シンドネ礼拝堂とサン・ロレンツォ聖堂は高度の数学的知識を駆使した複雑で幻想的な作品である。またパラッツォ・カリニャーノには、湾曲する正面部や卵形プランのサロンがみられ、きわめて動感に富んだ宮殿である。
