It is the main component of the essential oil contained in the rhizomes of ginger, Zingiber officinale , and is a type of sesquiterpene. Its boiling point is 130°C (14mmHg), specific optical rotation [α] _D = -73.38°C, refractive index n _D ²⁰ = 1.4956, and specific gravity is 0.8684. It turns into a resin when left to stand. When heated to 60°C in acetic acid containing a small amount of sulfuric acid, it becomes isozingiberene, and when dehydrogenated, it becomes cadarine. Another aromatic component of ginger is zingiberol, a type of sesquiterpene alcohol.

ショウガZingiber officinaleの根茎に含まれる精油の主成分で，セスキテルペン類の一種。沸点130℃(14mmHg)，比旋光度[α]_D＝－73.38℃，屈折率n_D²⁰＝1.4956，比重0.8684。放置すると樹脂化する。少量の硫酸を含む酢酸中で60℃に加熱するとイソジンギベレンになり，脱水素するとカダリンになる。ショウガの香気成分にはこのほかにセスキテルペンアルコールの一種ジンギベロールzingiberolがある。
