[The origins of horror movies]
The oldest theme of horror movies was born from two literary works, "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," both of which were made into films in 1908, but in terms of film history, it is generally believed that the origins of horror movies can be traced back to "German Expressionist films" (Expressionism), which began just after World War I. A typical example is "Dr. Caligari" (1919) directed by Robert Wiene, which has been called "the true blueprint of horror movies" and is said to have created the pattern of "mad doctor - monster - beautiful woman attacked." This was followed by "Nosferatu" (1922) directed by FW Murnau, the first full-scale film adaptation of "Dracula," an original novel by Bram Stoker.

［怪奇映画の源流］
　怪奇映画のもっとも古いテーマは，《フランケンシュタイン》と《ジキル博士とハイド氏》の二つの文芸作品から生まれ，いずれも1908年に映画化されているが，映画史的には，怪奇映画の源流は，第1次世界大戦直後に始まる〈ドイツ表現主義映画〉(表現主義)に発するというのが定説である。ロベルト･ウィーネ監督の《カリガリ博士》(1919)がその典型で，〈怪奇映画の真の青写真〉と呼ばれ，〈狂人博士―怪物―襲われる美女〉のパターンをつくった映画ともいわれている。次いでブラム･ストーカー原作《吸血鬼ドラキュラ》の初の本格的な映画化であるF.W.ムルナウ監督の《ノスフェラトゥ》(1922)が現れる。…
