Since independence, the government has been run by two parties representing the interests of the Sinhalese middle class, alternating between ruling and opposition parties in each general election. Both parties have a non-aligned foreign policy, but the United National Party, Eksat Jātika Pakshaya (Sinhalese name), has a strong pro-Western leaning, while the Liberal Party, Sri Lanka Nidahas Pakshaya (Sinhalese name), is more nationalistic and is said to place importance on friendly relations with socialist countries. The Tamil middle class, which was relatively favored during the colonial period due to the divide and rule policy, has had few opportunities to participate in the government after independence, and there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the ethnic majority.
