Interference fringes

Japanese: 干渉縞 - かんしょうじま

Light and dark stripes are created by the interference of light. When white light is used, the position of light and dark varies depending on the wavelength, so colored stripes appear. Experiments to see interference fringes include Young's experiment (strong light is sent through two parallel slits and received on a screen), Fresnel's biprism (a glass prism with an isosceles triangular cross section with a apex angle close to 180°), Fresnel's double mirror (two plane mirrors joined to form an angle close to 180°), and Newton's rings. There are also moire image interference fringes, which are similar to the moire pattern that occurs when a halftone print is placed on a grid screen to create a halftone print. The two lights that create interference fringes are said to be coherent, and coherent light that maintains a phase-aligned waveform for a long time is called a laser.

光の干渉によってできる明暗の縞模様。白色光を使ったときは波長によって明暗の位置が違うため色のついた縞が現れる。干渉縞を見る実験には，ヤングの実験（平行した二つのスリットに強い光を送りスクリーンに受ける），フレネルの複プリズム（断面が180°に近い頂角をもつ二等辺三角形のガラスプリズム），フレネルの複鏡（180°に近い角をなすよう接合した２枚の平面鏡），ニュートンリングなどがある。また，網版の印刷物を再び格子状スクリーンにかけて網版をつくるときに生じるモアレ模様と類似したモアレ像干渉縞がある。干渉縞をつくる二つの光はコヒーレントであるといい，位相のそろった波形が長く保たれるコヒーレントな光がレーザーである。
