A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (illustration) that is found in the cool temperate zones of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It grows to about 60 cm tall. It is covered with glandular hairs, and when the leaves or stems are cut, a milky liquid comes out. The leaves grow alternately at the bottom of the stem. The leaf blade is about 10 cm long with 5 to 7 lobes, resembling a maple leaf. It produces short creeping branches underground, with bulbs at the tips, and reproduces vegetatively. It flowers from August to September. The upper part of the stem branches out, and produces numerous pale purple flower heads about 1.5 cm in diameter. The flower heads consist only of ray flowers, and as the scientific name of the genus (prenes (pendulous) + anthes (flower)) suggests, they bloom drooping.
