An indigenous group of South America. A general term for the tribes that speak Guarani and belong to the Tupi-Guarani language family. The Guarani once lived over a wide area from the mouth of the Rio de la Plata to Uruguay, the southern coast of Brazil, and up the Rio de la Plata in Paraguay, Argentina, and parts of Brazil. The Chiriguano people of Guarani descent also entered what is now Bolivia and fought against the Inca Empire. The Chiriguano people are sometimes referred to as the Guarani. The direct descendants of the former Guarani have greatly decreased, and only a few remain in the border areas of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina (estimated to be about 3,000 to 5,000 people).
