A city at the mouth of the Terengganu River on the northeast coast of the Malaysian peninsula. The capital of Terengganu state. Just under 90% of the population of 228,000 (1991) are Malay, with the proportion of ethnic Chinese being the lowest of any major city in Malaysia. Small industries have flourished here since the days of the Johor Sultanate, and even today it is known for its weaving and dyeing industries. Due to the extensive sandbars on the coast, there was only a small fishing port, but as part of the government's industrial development policy, port facilities for the shipment of palm oil were built in 1970.
