A town in northern Thailand. Surrounded by mountains over 1000 meters high, it faces Lake Phayao, the third largest lake in the country. It was the capital of the Thai Kingdom of Phayao from the end of the 11th century to the first half of the 14th century. Ethnic minorities such as the Yao and Hmong people live in the surrounding area. On the shores of Lake Phayao are the Buddhist temple Wat Sri Khom Kham, built at the end of the 15th century, and the Phayao Culture Exhibition Hall.
