This perennial plant of the lily family grows as undergrowth in subalpine coniferous forests in central and northern Honshu. It has a long underground rhizome that produces thin stems 20-50 cm tall that branch 2-3 times. The leaves are 5-10 cm long, broadly elliptical, entire, and pointed at the tip. The base of the stem does not form a sheath. In early summer, each leaf axil produces a small yellow-green six-petaled flower. The slender flower stalk is attached to the stem up to the base of the upper leaf, where it then detaches from the stem and hangs down. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens red. Taxonomically, S. streptopoides , the parent species of this species, is a species widely distributed in the cool temperate zone of East Asia, is short at 15-30 cm tall, and rarely branches. The leaves also have thin columnar projections on their edges, and the plant grows in coniferous forests in Hokkaido, Japan.
